Come in and enjoy the bright and cheerful artwork on the gallery walls in the midst of winter! The gallery's annual Holiday Exhibition is now on display. Come enjoy treasures big and small spanning the 18th through 21st century. New works by contemporary New England artists are included, as well as American & European paintings by noted Maine artists Jay Hall Connaway, Abraham Bogdanove and James Fitzgerald, as well as by prominent French still life painter Antoine Vollon, British portrait painter John Northcote and noted British marine artist James Carmichael, among others.

During the months of November and December the gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm. Closed Mondays, and open by chance or appointment on Sundays.

Autumn Arrivals

It is a wonderful time of year in Maine! The air is crisp and clear, skies are blue, and the leaves of the swamp maples are beginning to turn. Take a drive up Route 1 and visit the gallery! "Autumn Arrivals" opens on Saturday, September 24th and will feature new paintings by contemporary New England artists as well as recent acquisitions of 19th and 20th century American and European art, including paintings by Jay Hall Connaway, William Zorach, Abraham Bogdanove, James Fitzgerald and others.

During the months of September and October, the gallery is open daily from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm. "Autumn Arrivals" will be on display through October 31st.

Hopper Exhibit In Maine

The Bowdoin College Museum of Art is showing a wonderful exhibit of Edward Hopper's work through the fall. The exhibition is on display through October 16th. If you haven't had a chance to get to the museum yet, it is worth the visit! The exhibition showcases a grouping of Hopper's plein air Monhegan Island oil sketches, which are especially fun to see. Enjoy!

"Travels Over the Seas: Italy, France and Beyond"

Abraham Hulk, "Clearing Skies"

Come explore the Venetian canals to the back streets and cafes of Paris and Montmartre, and the English coast back to New York and Rockport harbors in our exhibition, "Travels Over the Seas: Italy, France and Beyond," opening Saturday. The exhibition focuses on European and American landscape and genre paintings from the 19^th through the 21^st century. A group of plein air paintings of Italy and France by Keith Oehmig will also be on display.

John Fulton Folinsbee, "Pemaquid"

We are busy putting together a wonderful collection of paintings for our next exhibition, "Maine in the Twentieth Century," opening July 2nd. Featured in the exhibition will be a newly discovered group of watercolors and drawings by modernist William Zorach of Maine and Yosemite, as well as a collection of oils by illustrator Edmund Ward of Monhegan Island and a large oil of Pemaquid Lighthouse by John Fulton Folinsbee. Paintings by Abraham Bogdanove, Jay Hall Connaway, Thomas Craig, Elizabeth Jewell, Laurence Sisson, James Fitzgerald, AC Goodwin, Sears Gallagher and many others will also be included. Contemporary New England art will also be on display.

Come join us on Saturday, July 2nd to celebate the opening of "Maine in the Twentieth Century" and the start of summer! We will be hosting a reception Saturday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served. Come enjoy the art, food and conversation!

Now that the long days of summer have come and gone, and November is upon us, the gallery will be moving to its late fall schedule starting tomorrow, Sunday, October 31st. During the months of November and December, we will be open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:30 am until 5:00 pm. Closed Sunday and Monday.

The coast of Maine has a quiet beauty at this time of year. The leaves of the blueberry bushes are a brilliant red, and the deep yellow and brown leaves on the oak trees dance in the wind. Flocks of juncos flit about in the bushes. The sun shines off the water, and although the nights are getting cool, it is still warm during the day. Red's Eats may be closed for the season, but there are many stores open here in Wiscasset, and there are parking spaces to be had out front! So, take a drive up Route 1 and stop in to see us and enjoy the art!

Anthonie Jacobus van Wyngaerdt, "Clear Skies"

"Across the Pond and Back: 19th & 20th Century American & European Paintings" is opening at the gallery on Saturday, August 7th. This exhibition focuses on American and European landscape and genre paintings from the 19th and early 20th century.

Included in this exhibition is "The Initials, 1870," a richly painted genre scene by British artist Geroge Hardy, as well as "Stormy Weather," a dramatic seascape by 19th century British ship portrait painter, Samuel Walters. James Fitzgerald is represented by "Monhegan Cliffs (Shore Patrol)," a bold watercolor depicting a lone figure patrolling the island's perimeter, with the island's cliffs rising up in the background of the painting. A 1914 rendition of Monhegan's harbor, depicted with impressionistic brushwork, by George Clowes Everett, is also on display. Small plein air paintings by Bernard Corey of the New England hillsides and pastures, as well as views of Venice and the backstreets and cafes of Montmartre in Paris are also included.

So come on in, and enjoy the tour across Europe and back to Maine through the centuries!

Spring is here!

Spring Is On Its Way!

It is early March, but it feels like spring! We have had some nice warm weather up along the coast this past week, and there is little snow on the ground. It will soon be time for the flowers to start blooming and for the summer season to begin! With that in mind, we are thinking about our upcoming season - Keith's 26th season in business and the 150th anniversary for the town of Wiscasset. It should be a good one!

In the meantime, through the end of the month, we are open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm. Starting on April 1st, we will be open Tuesday through Saturdays from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm. Stop in and see us! We have a wonderful group of paintings and sculpture on display, including a number of Laurence Sisson watercolors, a group of oils by Abraham Bogdanove and Jay Hall Connaway, soft pastorals by Bernard Corey, and new works by contemporary New England artists.

The first snow has fallen here along the coast of Maine, wreaths are being hung on the homes around the village and holiday trees are being lit. Winter is on its way, and the holiday season is upon us. All of us at the Wiscasset Bay Gallery wish you the very best this holiday season!

In other gallery news, our gallery manager, Danielle, and her husband welcomed their first child, Samantha, into the world on October 9th!

Danielle is taking some time off in the next few months, but will be back in the gallery this winter. In the meantime, Keith and Cordelia are holding down the fort!

La Vie Tranquille

Franz de Beul, "A Moment's Rest"

"La Vie Tranquille: 19th & 20th Century European & American Paintings" is now on display at the gallery. This exhibition features pastoral landscapes and genre scenes by European and American artists from the 19th and early 20th century. These bucolic scenes include "A Moment's Rest" by Franz de Beul (Belgian, 1849 - 1919), in which the artist captures a shepherd herding his flock along a country lane at the edge of a village, as well as an intimate genre scene entitled "Young Girl with Rabbit" by John Pasmore (British, 1849 - 1919). Works by Worthington Whittredge, Franklin De Haven, Sears Gallagher, SPR Triscott, Emile van Marcke de Lummen, Carl Krafft and others are included in this exhibition.

On display in conjuction with "La Vie Tranquille" is an exhibition of Keith's works of the French countryside.

Keith Oehmig, "Market at Carpentras"

"Souvenirs de Provence: Small Works in Oil by Keith Oehmig" features new works from Keith's trip to France earlier this summer. The paintings capture the rolling hillsides, villages, poppy fields and vineyards of Provence, as well as the harbors of Cassis and St. Tropez.

Both exhibitions are on display through September 3rd.

Painting in France

Keith has been painting in France for the past week. After several days in Paris, he has now joined up with a group of painters led by Ian Roberts, staying in Le Barroux, a small village in Provence, near Avignon. The poppies are blooming and the weather has been beautiful. Keith has been painting several paintings a day and is truly enjoying the experience.

We will be sure to post his new Provence paintings once he returns to the States!

With a successful and busy Memorial Day weekend behind us, summer is now upon us. Thanks to all those who came by on May 23rd for our opening reception! We look forward to a season of meeting new friends and catching up with old customers. Coastal landscapes, quiet ponds and mountain vistas, as well as vibrant floral bouquets, abound in the works of our contemporary artists. Fresh new works by contemporary New England artists, as well as 19th and 20th century American and European paintings will be on display. Paintings by Sears Gallagher, Jay Hall Connaway, Abraham Bogdanove, Bernard Corey, Walter Farndon and many others are included in this exhibition.

Through the month of May, the gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm. We are closed Mondays, with the exception of Memorial Day, May 25th, when we will be open from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm.
